If you asked John Howard to describe his career in one sentence, he’d probably undersell it. The truth is... it reads more like a highlight reel.
U.S. Navy veteran. Firefighter. Law enforcement officer. The kind of guy who ran toward problems when everyone else was running away. But behind all of that was a bigger goal... building something of his own, side by side with his wife, Mary-Margaret Howard.
After 15 years of marriage (and a lot of conversations about “someday”) they decided someday was now.
They didn’t jump blindly. They studied, researched, and asked the hard questions. When they found Great Clips, it wasn’t just about haircuts. It was about systems, people, and a brand built to last. That’s what made the decision.
They started with one salon in Kerrville, a town John knew well from his years in law enforcement. It wasn’t glamorous. It was early mornings, long days, and figuring things out as they went. But they focused on doing the right things: hiring great people, building a strong culture, and showing up every single day.
And it worked.
One salon turned into two. Two turned into more. About 6 and a half years in, Mary-Margaret stepped away from her marketing career to join the business full-time. That’s when things really started to accelerate.
Today, their company, You Sit We Clip, operates multiple salons across the Texas Hill Country, San Antonio, and the Gulf Coast, with a team of more than 75 people.
But what they’re most proud of isn’t the number of locations... it’s the people inside them.
They still show up. They visit their salons. They run weekly manager meetings. They’ve built a business where people don’t just come to work. They stay, grow, and move up.
AND THEY'RE NOT SLOWING DOWN.
With three new salons opening in 2026 - Fredericksburg, Babcock/1604, and Borgfeld near Piper High School -the team is expanding fast. That means more opportunity, more training, and more careers being built right now.
Because at the end of the day, this was never just about opening salons.
It’s about building something that lasts and bringing great people along for the ride.

When John and Mary-Margaret started researching franchise opportunities, they evaluated a lot of options. Great Clips stood out for a specific reason: it was a business built to run well without the owners being present at every location at every moment. For a couple who wanted to build something that could grow, that mattered.
The more they dug in, the more they believed in the brand. The systems were proven. The direction was clear. The other franchisees they met during due diligence reinforced it. Great Clips gave them the framework to build the kind of business they had talked about for years, and the stability of the largest hair salon brand in the country behind them every step of the way.
Every manager in our organization started on our floor as a stylist. We have never once hired someone from outside into a leadership role. When you join our team, you are joining an organization that is always looking internally first. If you have the drive, we will help you find the path.
Kids, parents, appointments, obligations. We have heard it all, and we have worked with all of it. Great stylists come with full lives, and we would rather build a schedule around yours than lose a talented person over a calendar. If another employer told you no, it is worth having a conversation with us.
We hold weekly manager meetings. We visit our salons regularly. We know our team members by name, and we know what matters to them. When life gets hard, we notice. When someone does great work, we celebrate it. We set out to build a workplace worth staying for, and our team has proven we got it right.

We’re looking for licensed cosmetologists who want to be part of a team that actually cares. If you’re ready for consistent pay, a schedule that works for your life, and a clear path to grow your career, let’s talk.
